Mason Ho! Named one of the “World’s most entertaining surfers” by Stab, The Inertia, and Surfer. Mason Ho comes from a legendary dynasty of surfing, Mason is the son of professional surfer Michael Ho, brother of Coco Ho (who frickin rips), and nephew to world champion Derek Ho. Mason is continuing to make the name Ho remembered in the surf industry.
Mason as well as the rest of the Ho dynasty of surfers are ingrained into Hawaii’s surf culture. Mason lives in the house he grew up in on Oahu, and he is known for his presence as a free surfer broadcasting his adventures on and off the island. Stab recognized Mason as having the ‘old school’ power and ‘new school’ aerial antics.
Mason is known for his adventures and aggressive style on sketchy waves and can even be a little sketchy outside of the water “Mason is the most polite brawler and hedonist I have ever met” says a stab reporter who got really personal with mason about his wild stories abroad.
His well-intended attitude and presence come across clearly through his vlogging and free surfing throughout many videos, He claims he is more of a natural in free surfing than in competition in an interview with SURFER mag. The competition helped Mason get some validation within the competitive side but his audience can tell you his real talent and enjoyment of the sport shines through in his free surf adventures.
Digging more into Mason’s competitive side of his career; he’s had some success as you can tell from the first picture in this article. His most notorious win took place at the WSL Air Tahiti Rangiroa Pro against Eli Hanneman. Mason surfed a perfect 10 to clinch the second QS win of his career! Mason’s easy-going attitude kept him modest even upon the win. Ripcurl reported that Mason said “I’m so stoked, I did not expect to win any QS events this year, I mean it’s always the plan, it’s been a plan for life, but to actually do it is such a cool feeling. Just to travel to a special place like Tahiti and get a result, let alone win, has always been a dream of mine”
There is no doubt that Mason is a well-rounded surfer with a lot of respect for the culture while blending some newer techniques into his game. He is taking advantage of the newer avenues of being a pro surfer capitalizing on brand deals and youtube to keep his career well funded and traveling. Much respect Mason, we can’t wait to see more!
