Best Tide for Surfing: Low, Mid or High?
Why tide changes the wave
Tide changes the depth of water over the sand or reef the wave breaks on. A wave breaks when the water gets shallow enough relative to its height — roughly when depth is about 1.3 times the wave height. So:
- Less water (lower tide) makes waves break harder, hollower and earlier — further out. Too little and they close out or break on dry reef.
- More water (higher tide) makes waves break softer, later and closer to shore. Too much and the swell rolls through as an unbroken swell ("fat" or "mushy"), or shore-breaks.
- Moving water (incoming or outgoing) adds current. A rising tide pushes water in with the swell and tends to help; a strong outgoing tide fights it.
The size of the swing matters too. A 1ft tide range (Gulf Coast, parts of Southern California in neap tides) barely changes anything; a 6–10ft range (Northern California, New England, much of the UK) can switch a spot on and off in an hour.

These are starting points, not laws. Plenty of beach breaks are high-tide spots because of a steep bank; plenty of points handle low. The table tells you where to start looking; your own sessions tell you the answer.
Incoming vs outgoing tide
At most spots the incoming (flooding, pushing) tide is the better half. The rising water moves with the swell, waves feel like they have more push, and the lineup fills in predictably. The last two hours before high and the first hour after are often the sweet spot at mid-to-high spots.
The outgoing (ebbing, dropping) tide isn't bad everywhere — reefs and some beach breaks get hollower as the water drains — but it brings stronger rips and currents, especially near river mouths and jetties, and the waves can go from hollow to closing out quickly.
Slack tide (the hour around high or low when the water isn't moving) is often slightly weaker at beach breaks and slightly cleaner at reefs.
Low vs high tide, quickly
- Low tide: hollower, faster, more close-outs, more exposed hazards. Good on small-to-medium swells at beach breaks; risky at shallow reefs.
- High tide: softer, slower, fatter. Good for longboarding, beginners, and points that need water; bad when the swell is small (it rolls through unbroken).
- Mid tide: the compromise most breaks like most of the time. If you know nothing about a spot, surf it mid-tide on the push.
How to find your spot's tide window
- Note the tide every session. Height and direction. After ten sessions a pattern shows up.
