Check out the second post <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/lazysurfer.app\/blog\/?p=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@surf.lazy\/reading-surf-forecasts-what-can-go-wrong-12d435be2f59\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d965\" class=\"graf graf--p graf--leading\">Any forecast worth its salt will include at least 7 metrics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"a919\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Swell Height <\/strong>\u2014This has a technical definition that we\u2019ll get into in a later post but for now let\u2019s use the obvious definition\u200a\u2014\u200athis is the height from the bottom (trough) of the wave to the top (crest).<\/p>\n<p id=\"b02f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Swell Direction<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200aThe direction in degrees (270<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">\u00b0 <\/strong>being west, 90<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">\u00b0 <\/strong>being east) that the waves are <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">coming from <\/strong>(not going to).<\/p>\n<p id=\"a01e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Swell Period<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200aThe time (in seconds) between waves. We\u2019ll get into why this is important later.<\/p>\n<p id=\"46cf\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Wind Speed + Wind Direction<\/strong>\u2014 Self explanatory. Direction is measured in degrees just like swell direction.<\/p>\n<p id=\"692d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Tide Height\u200a<\/strong>\u2014\u200aThis, like swell height, has a technical definition but for now we\u2019ll go with the obvious definition\u200a\u2014\u200athis describes how high up the shore the water would sit if there were no waves.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4413\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Tide Direction<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200aIs the tide going up or down?<\/p>\n<p id=\"21d4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Most beginning surfers focus on one metric\u200a\u2014\u200aswell height.
